![]() ![]() ![]() There are lots of ways characters can join in a story, and they don’t all have to be working with or against a main character. Those acting against the protagonist are called antagonists, and the interactions between them create conflict or tension in a story’s plot. The main character is often known as the protagonist. Every story will have at least one character (the main character). 4Ĭharacters are the population of the story. Third-person point of view is sometimes called the “omniscient” or “all-knowing” point of view. While the story may follow a single character, third-person point of view grants readers access to the movements of all of the characters, as well as to their thoughts and feelings, establishing a much wider scope of knowledge. Third person: Third-person point of view is narrated from a position outside of the characters in the story. ![]() You will find second-person point of view in many educational resources (like this blog post), as well as in self-help books and articles. Second person: Second-person point of view uses the pronoun you and makes the reader the main character. You will notice pronouns like I, me, my, and our in writing done in the first-person point of view. The three broad categories are:įirst person: The story is told through the eyes of a main character. There are different points of view that a writer can use. The difference between narrator and point of view is that a narrator is the entity through which a point of view is told, while point of view is the position from which the narrator sees the story. Point of view is the angle through which a story is told. 3Īn element closely related to narrator is point of view. An example of the latter is The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein, where the narrator is a loyal dog named Enzo. A narrator can be a single person, like Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, an omniscient entity, or a nonhuman narrator like an insect or animal. The narrator is a central figure through which the story is told. Stories can also have multiple plots, like Celeste Ng’s novel Little Fires Everywhere, which follows the lives of two families in an Ohio suburb. Some stories have a single, central plot, like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, which revolves around race and a trial in the rural South. ![]() As long as a story has a beginning, middle, and end, it has a plot. A plot does not have to be a complicated weave of actions, although that’s an option. It is what your characters do, what events transpire, and in what order. Literary devices are techniques or flourishes that a writer can apply to their writing- imagery, personification, and allusion are all examples of literary devices. Literary elements are the foundation of a story, like plot, setting, and characters. The difference is that literary elements are essential, while literary devices are optional. Literary elements and literary devices are both useful storytelling components that guide and shape a story. Below we’ll look at eight of the basic literary elements, but first we have a quick note about the difference between literary elements and literary devices. There are endless variations within each element, and deciding on these variations is where the writer’s work takes place. If the story lacks an answer to one of these questions, it’s an incomplete story. Think of literary elements as answering the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a story. Literary elements are essential components that build a story, such as plot, narrator, point of view, and setting. The Ithaca Kitty, the first mass produced plush toy, was based on a tabby cat named Caesar Grimalkin. How he managed to have a purple half brother named Raul is anybody's guess. It was revealed in one special that his mother was a yellow tabby. Garfield is the world's most famous tabby. The ASIP gene controls whether the cat’s coat will have bands or be solid colored. The Mc1R gene determines how dark the coat will be. These are the Agouti Signaling Protein (ASIP), Mc1R and Taqpep. Scientists have identified three separate genes involved in tabby-pattern process. The markings are especially apparent on the head and legs. Patched Tabby CatĪnother word for such cats is “ torbie” as their coat is a blend of tabby stripes and tortoiseshell pattern. Other breeds are required not to have any barring at all. In purebred cats, some breeds are allowed by the AFC to have stripes, also known as bars, on the legs and face. It just means that rather than a pattern on the body, each and every individual hair has bands of color on it. If a cat is ticked, that doesn't mean he's angry! It also doesn't mean he's infested with a nasty blood sucking parasite either. Jaguars, for example, have rosettes while leopards have spots. If the spots have a dark outline along with a lighter color in the center, they are called rosettes. These tabbies don't have stripes but spots. The striped patterned evolved as a means of camouflage, making it easier to stalk prey in tall grass. The first of the domesticated felines were very likely striped like their wild ancestors. Origin of Tabby CatsĪs the tabby pattern is ubiquitous among wild felines, it might be supposed that cats of the medieval era were tabbies. ![]() Since tabbies come in every breed, you could have a Persian or an angora that looks like a fluffy little tiger. If you look closely at a black cat under strong lighting, you may be able to see some faint tabby stripes, just as a black panther has leopard spots among that ebon fur. A grey tabby can be silver grey or blue grey. They can be brown, grey, orange or yellow but they must be striped. What is a tabby cat?Ī tabby is not a breed of cat but a coat pattern. ![]() ![]() Shortcut to Size offers many opportunities to incorporate supersets, which helps you get in and out of the gym in less time.įor example, in Day 1-the chest, triceps, calves workout-you do four exercises for chest, two compound moves and two isolation moves. Workout correctly the first time, every time.Īdding Heavy-Light Supersets to Shortcut to Size Quickly read through our step-by-step directions to ensure you're doing each I also provided examples of different rep ranges to show variety. I included two supersets per body part to show the pre-exhaust on the second pair of exercises. Sample Heavy-Light Superset Workoutīelow are superset pairings for chest, back, legs, and triceps. The second superset flips the order to deliver the pre-exhaust. In adding the heavy-light technique, you do the first superset with the compound move first, followed by an isolation exercise. This one includes two supersets per muscle group-four exercises total. In most of my programs, each muscle group is trained with multiple exercises. Pre-exhaustion is a great technique for building muscle and using it within a superset will further enhance fat loss by boosting the body's metabolism. Combining Supersets with Pre-ExhaustĪnother technique I like to add to supersets is pre-exhaustion, where you train an isolation (single-joint) exercise before a compound (multijoint) move. This strikes the perfect balance between maximizing calorie burning during workouts and bumping up EPOC afterward. Throughout the eight weeks, your muscles are exposed to pretty much all weights and rep ranges. Weeks 7-8: 3-4 reps for heavy exercise, 26-30 reps for light exerciseĪs you can see, in the last four weeks, you're going both very heavy and very light in each in of your same-body-part supersets, whereas in the first four weeks the reps stay more in the moderate range, never dipping below seven or going higher than 20.Week 5-6: 5-6 reps for heavy exercise, 21-25 reps for light exercise. ![]() Weeks 3-4: 7-8 reps for heavy exercise, 16-20 reps for light exercise.Weeks 1-2: 9-10 reps for heavy exercise, 12-15 reps for light exercise. Here's how the reps progress through the program: You have two types of periodization occurring here simultaneously: linear periodization on the heavy exercises, where weight gets progressively heavier and rep counts decrease, and the opposite-reverse linear-on the light exercises. Every two weeks, the heavy weight gets heavier and the reps lower, and the light weight gets lighter with higher reps. In Super Shredded 8, each superset includes a heavy and a light exercise, but the weights don't stagnate. I bring this up because my heavy-light technique, as illustrated below, uses same-body-part supersets. Nowadays, any time two exercises are done back to back, regardless of what muscles they train, it's called a superset. When the two exercises train the same muscle group, it's technically called a compound set-but that's semantics at this point. ![]() After the second exercise in the pairing, you take a rest, then repeat the process.Īs documented by Joe Weider more than 50 years ago, a true superset involves exercises for opposing muscle groups for example, chest and back, biceps and triceps, quads and hamstrings. Generally speaking, the superset is a straightforward technique: two exercises performed back to back with no rest in between. By alternating high reps and low reps within supersets, you'll take your intensity to the next level and start seeing results in muscle size and fat loss in a matter of weeks, plateaus be damned! Supersetting Basics I first introduced these pairings in my Super Shredded 8 program. One of my favorite creations is the "heavy-light" superset. Supersets show up in many of my programs, both here on and on my membership site,, but I'm constantly changing the way I use them. ![]() |
